Eberhard Faber, also called John Eberhard Faber, (born Dec. 6, 1822, Stein, Bavaria [Germany]—died March 2, 1879, New York, N.Y., U.S.), German businessman who, with his brother Lothar, expanded his family’s pencil company into a global art supplies enterprise. Lead pencil manufacturer; founded by Johann (John) Eberhard Faber (1822-1879); opened stationery store in New York in 1848; began exporting cedar to Faber (Faber-Castel) factory in Germany; opened pencil factory in 1861 in New York under name Eberhard Faber; business bought by Faber-Castell in 1932 to become part of Faber-Castel group. John Eberhard Faber (sometimes Johann Eberhard Faber) (December 6, 1822 – March 2, 1879), was a German-born American manufacturer of pencils in New York and the first person to establish a large scale pencil factory in the U.S.. It was Lothar von Faber, the great-great-grandfather of the present head of the company, who created A.W. Faber – and the first ever brand-name writing implement.
